Matte finishes and Fall always seemed to be a match made in heaven. As soon as fall arrives, it’s suddenly all about matte finishes, once again. I mean, to be honest, when it comes to lip products I love a good matte formula more than anything else, regardless of the time of year. Usually, there’s no worrying about your lipstick feathering out, bleeding, or feeling tacky or sticky.

Burberry’s Liquid Velvet will probably always be my “matte favorite” and its formula is among some of the longest lasting matte formulas I’ve tried so far. Maybelline’s Super Stay Matte Ink liquid lipsticks were also a pleasant surprise as so many matte-lovers, myself included, fell in love with their formula. There’s also another “liquid matte” favorite that can be found at the drugstore: Pixi Matte Last Liquid Lip.*

I fell in love with Pixi’s Matte Last Liquid Lip formula a while ago. Pixi recently added four new shades to the collection (Real Red, Peony Pink, Berry Boost, Orange Red and Bare Beauty) so, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to swatch them all and review the formula.

Here’s what Pixi say about their Matte Last Liquid Lip Lipsticks*:

“Extremely long-wearing and comfortable formula, infused with rosehip oil. Quickly sets to a matte veil while leaving lips hydrated. Colors are universally flattering and wearable. The color applies smoothly and uniformly in a single stroke. Unique PixiPetal applicator provides an even and precise application.”

Now, let’s go back to the old school ways we used to review products here on the blog and talk about what I love vs. what I don’t love about these.

What I love:

-when the guys from Pixi say these are long-lasting, they mean business. I’ve worn these all day and the single application survived my constant tea and water drinking and even got through lunch and dinner with no touch-ups.
-the matte finish is beautiful and non-drying (if you prep your lips and use a lip balm that is, so those suffering from chronically dry lips need to be careful). It goes on very glossy and dries to a matte finish.
-although not necessarily “unique,” the applicator is pure perfection and really allows for a flawless application (Maybelline’s Super Stay Matte Ink liquid lipsticks have a very similar applicator). It’s a tear-shaped wand that is also slightly slanted which makes application very easy + because of how precise the applicator is, there’s also no need for a lip liner.
-the color range is very pretty and all shades seem like they’d be flattering on most skin tones.
-the formula is very lightweight and comfortable, despite having a matte finish. It also dries very quickly and once dry, it won’t move or transfer.

What I don’t love:

-not all of the Matte Last Liquid Lips were created equal. The color payoff is not the same with all shades- the darkest shade, for example, “Berry Boost” doesn’t seem to be as nearly pigmented as others and when applied, the shade doesn’t look nearly as deep as it appears in the tube.
-some of the deeper colors also tend to feather out a bit, but it’s nothing that can’t be fixed with a lip primer or my favorite lip line perfector.
-many of the shades look a bit similar, I think it’d be fun to see something a bit bolder, like more bright reds, maybe some plums/purples. They do describe the shades in this collection as “universally flattering and wearable” and I guess I can’t argue with that point.

Left to right: Pastel Petal, Au Naturelle, Bare Beauty, Matte Beige, Evening Rose, Really Rose, Peony Pink, Prettiest Pink, Orange Red, Real Red, Berry Boost.

The bottom line: if you love matte lip products, you would probably really like these. They’re not as hydrating as some of the high-end liquid formula + matte finish lip products, but they’re long-lasting, pigmented and have a very soft, fluffy and comfortable formula.
