What’s in my makeup bag: January

After a month-long break I took from wearing makeup.. I’m back.

Even though my skin is looking better than it has in many, many years, it felt so good to start wearing makeup again. I always get slightly annoyed when people think that women (or men) wear makeup because they feel like they need to wear it. It’s not the case for me, just like I know it isn’t the case for majority of us.

I love my mornings, when I listen to an audiobook or to my favorite morning radio show, and put makeup on. It’s not something that I feel I need to do. It’s something that I enjoy doing, I don’t ever dread it, I look forward to it. every. single. day. Love reaching for my favorite products, or testing out new ones. And speaking of new products, I told you in this post that I’m planning to not buy any new makeup products until April. I just feel that I already have a very large collection and it’s such a waste to buy products, just to “have them” especially since I don’t tend to do as many one-product reviews as I have in the past. My sissy knows best though, and she bought me the Hourglass Ambient Strobe Lighting Blush Palette. I missed out on their previous LE blush palette and really wanted to get my hands on this one and only started using it this week. So far, I love how luminous these blushes are, they definitely add a beautiful, healthy glow to skin.

Last week I went in for my monthly appointment and my dermatologist put me on a higher dose of Absorica (since I’m mid-treatment I’m planning to finally write a post about it). I didn’t think I’d notice a big difference but OMG the fatigue is real, guys. I usually enjoy coffee only on the weekends as during college I had a pretty bad addiction to energy drinks. Now I’m back to drinking 3 cups of coffee a day. I sleep for 10 hours, which is also highly unusual for me as anything longer than 6-7 hours is too much for me. Nowadays, I’m just tired all.the.time. Despite sleeping for that long, I still have dark circles under my eyes- also something I never had to deal with until I went on Absorica, even if running on very little sleep. So, after my little break from makeup, I couldn’t wait to dig out my concealer. I actually use two: Urban Decay Naked Concealer and MAC Pro Longwear. Most of the time I use the Naked Concealer in Fair Neutral, but right now I’m reaching for Light Warm which is a bit warmer and helps me conceal those circles. I add a little Pro Longer in NC 15 on top of that to brighten that area.

I feel like I’ve been super boring with my foundation choices lately, but the truth is, I really don’t need a whole lot of coverage and since I’m currently very dry, I’m also not picky. Let me tell you, it’s a strange feeling looking in the mirror mid-day and realizing that your foundation is in fact still intact and not melting off your face. So, a few of my light and dry skin favorites have a solid spot in my makeup bag: Guerlain Meteorites Baby Glow Foundation, L’Oreal True Match and Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua.

On my Instagram I also mentioned these multi-tasking pencils from BHÜE Beauty and I was so surprised at how creamy and smooth they were. They also smudge (on eyes as an eyeshadow base) and blend nicely and work on eyes, lips, brows, cheeks. I’ve been really enjoying using them so far.

I’ve been staying away from lipstick, as a lot of them tend to be really drying on me right now. Mostly I’ve been just using a ton of lip balms. Today I also used the Rodial Suede Lips lippie in Melrose Ave and I’m happy to report that it wears quite comfortably (provided that my lips are taken care of and not peeling). Other than that, I’m planning to reach out for my favorite, light glosses like Chanel Glossier in Beige Star (206) or Dior Fluid Stick in Avant-Garde. Also loving the Smokey Eye Sculpt Eyeshadow Palette from Rodial. This palette is handy and cute and the shades are perfect for everyday use.

What’s in your makeup bag this month? I know that many of you guys are passionate about makeup as well, but do you think that you also sometimes tend to buy certain products, just because you “have to have them“? Would love to hear your thoughts on this one!

i’m pretty in love with my urban decay liquid foundation and lash primer. i NEED them lol. I’m still on the hunt for the best lid primer especially for days i just don’t want to do the whole eyeshadow thing! http://studiojewel.com

  • All those neutral shades are calling my name!! My bag is currently full of cle de peau and wander beauty lip sticks and glosses.

I definitely used to buy things because I “had” to have them, but thankfully that’s a habit long gone. I just started accumulating so much nice, expensive make and I wasn’t really using everything. Nowadays I’m really picky about new things, but when I finally do buy something I enjoy it more! Currently playing with a few new favorites including ABH Modern Renaissance + Pink Champagne, Kat von D Bow and Arrow liquid lipstick, and Bite pepper!

I’d love to eventually get an Hourglass palette because they’re always soooo pretty, but I am going to try to use up a blush or two first! So gorgeous though, and the texture sounds heavenly.

I’m aways looking for new products and you always give really great and honest opinions, Paula. In this post and some of your others, I wonder how to identify the products and their sources —before or after the photo? Otherwise I so enjoy your posts.

  • What a lovely post! I always look for new products but do not buy them always, because of my budget :) I always use mascara and lipstick so these products I buy every 2 months.

  • The Mac Pro Longwear concealer is my all time favourite! It’s such amazing coverage and it comes in a pale enough shade but the glass bottle worries me a bit, lovely post xx

  • Oh, I have so much stuff in my make up bag that does not suit me at all but it looks so good on other people, and I had to have it… Definitely guilty of that.

  • I have never tried the Loreal True Match foundation, I remember Lauren Curtis raving about it!

  • I love L’Oreal True Match, wearing it right now, and the Rodial Smoky Eye palette is stunning. Gorgeous palette and makeup, thanks for sharing Paula, hope you’re well xxx

  • The Urban Decay Naked Concealer and the MAC Prolongwear are my two favourites, they are both fab! x

Beautiful picks Paula – I feel I now need to go and get the Rodial palette, I’m not a huge eyeshadow wearer but it looks so ‘essential’ I feel I’d get great use out of it. I’m feeling I ‘have to have’ the new Chanel highlighter even though I have a million others – it’s going to be a real struggle to stay away from it!

  • I always enjoy putting my make-up on every day too! (except for maybe my eyebrows haha!) It’s part of my morning routine and sets me up feeling good and organised and prepared for the day :) xx

I’m wanting to try UD concealer. How does it compare to nars creamy stick concealer? I’d love a bit heavier without settling into fine lines. I’m going to check it out!

  • Wildfire Charm

These are some amazing products! It’s so awesome that L’oreal true match made it into your high end routine too :)

OMG love your photos! I have been on my acne meds for 4 months now and my skin continues to change on a daily basis. A bit frustrating! Chanel’s aqua foundation was really working for me and now this 2nd bottle is just settling into lines! Ugh. Now I have to hunt for a new foundation. This acne process is such a pain. Good luck to you!

Lovely post and gorgeous pics! I also love the Chanel Vitalumière aqua :)

  • Great post! The naked skin concealer is my favorite and I always have to have it haha. I also use isotretinoin and I’m struggling with the dryness .

the hourglass palette is sooooo beautiful xx

  • I told my husband a few months ago that I was going on an eyeshadow no buy for 1 full year. I think it lasted a month. I really think I need to chill on eye makeup (but it’s my weakness), and foundations. April sounds perfect bc… hello, Sephora 15% off sale ;-)

  • Oooooh my, look at all those swatches! <3

  • I need the new Hourglass blush palette in my life! The Rodial eyeshadow palette looks gorgeous too :)

    Your photos are absolutely incredible!

  • I always want to ask you about your zodiac sign, we share so much in common :D Love your product selection here and agree 100% make-up is art, it’s fun and if we dress our bodies, why not dress our faces? xx

  • I feel the same about makeup – I don’t NEED makeup (let’s be real, no one NEEDS it) but it’s just so much fun! The ‘have to have it’ mentality is fun but I find I’m actually straying away from it and making more controlled purchases, which is making my bank account much happier!
